About the Workforce Training Program
HCCL is proud to offer the only bilingual workforce development training program – soft skills only – in Louisiana at our Hispanic Business Resources & Technology Center which is housed on the campus of Delgado Community College along Airline Drive in Jefferson Parish.
Kudos to our partner Aztec Software
The workforce training program was initiated in 2008 and has enjoyed great success. We would like to acknowledge AZTEC Software for their commitment to HCCL in providing such an excellent learning tool. Aztec has been a first class partner and we cannot recommend them highly enough to anyone considering establishing a similar initiative. Our students love the curriculum and that in itself is the highest compliment ! For more information about Aztec Software, – whose motto is “Educate ! Empower ! Assessing the Learner
When adult learners first come to apply, they are given a test to ascertain their level of English proficiency. They are then placed into the study program at the appropriate level. The course is web-based which allows the learners the convenience of studying at their own pace but with the assistance of a live instructor if needed. For their added convenience, learners may use the computer lab at our Center or study from a home or public computer.
Study Modules
The course is divided into modules and learners must successfully complete each module before being allowed to proceed to the next. The initial modules focus on workforce readiness skills. English language skills and vocabulary are part of the process. There are also industry specific modules to learn the terminology of certain industries. As the course progresses, the Spanish gradually starts to fall away and the learner becomes used to working in English. While the program does not guaranty fluency in English, it does prepare learners to be able to perform a job effectively in English.
After completion of the program
Once someone has completed the program, they have choices: we can refer them to Delgado Community College to continue their studies either on the academic side earning a degree, or on the technical training side to earn a certificate or degree; OR, they can immediately go to work. Our Case Worker assists the learners with resumes, job applications, and interview preparation, and works with member businesses of HCCL having employment needs.
